Ambulance - BLS Level

Northwest Kansas EMS is a hospital-based Type II BLS ambulance service licensed by the State of Kansas and covering a primary service area of over 1,000 square miles, with a population of approximately 6,300 residents.

The service is currently staffed with approximately 28 volunteers, including 19 EMT-Basics, 2 EMT-Intermediates, 1 Paramedic, 1 RN/Paramedic, 1 RN, 3 Drivers, and 1 First Responder. Northwest Kansas EMS currently operates 3 Type II ambulances, with Type I ALS capabilities on 2 of the 3 units. Twenty four hour service is available to all persons living in Goodland, Kanorado, Ruleton, Edson, and rural Sherman County, as well as any person traveling through Sherman County.

Northwest Kansas EMS prides itself on being a progressive service and, in addition to emergency response, offers standby coverage and long distance transfers, plus airport transfers for fixed wing transport by Eagle Med, the air ambulance service based at Renner Field in Goodland.

The Northwest Kansas Ambulance Service was established in 1968 and was staffed by an all volunteer service comprised of mainly hospital volunteers. It replaced the prior service operated by Sage & Smith Funeral Home, which was primarily a transport service only. The service has progressively grown into one of the largest services in Northwest Kansas, with an average call volume of 800 incidents per year, including 825 incidents responded to in 2006.

"NWKEMS is community and public oriented, we are here to serve not only the residents of Sherman County but the visitors and travelers as well. We are dedicated to serving the community and providing quality care in all aspects of EMS," states Bruce Gleason, director for NWKEMS.
