About the Medical Foundation
"A Commitment to Quality Care!"
The mission of the Northwest Kansas Area Medical Foundation is to promote, advance, and assist in the development of quality systems of health care delivery in cooperation with Goodland Regional Medical Center on behalf of the residents of the Tri-State area.
Chartered by the State of Kansas in 1968 as a 501(c)3 not-for-profit charitable organization, the foundation played an important role in helping finance equipment and furnishings for Goodland Regional Medical Center during its building phase between 1970-1972. This goal was accomplished through the solicitation of private donations and endowments from local and area residents by members of the foundation board.
Following the completion of the hospital in 1972, the Foundation went through a period of inactivity before being revived in 1983. Its revival coincided with changes in health care delivery and reimbursement levels for hospitals. These changes involved providing more and more services on an outpatient rather than an inpatient basis, and a scaling back of payments made to hospitals for patient related services on the part of many third-party payers such as Medicare, Medicaid, and many commercial insurance programs.
These changes significantly reduced hospital revenues and made it necessary to reach out to the private sector for financial assistance. Such assistance was needed to enable hospitals to keep pace with the need for new equipment, technology and medical services on behalf of their patients.
Since 1983, the Northwest Kansas Area Medical Foundation has taken on an ever-expanding role in this regard on behalf of Goodland Regional Medical Center. The intent of the Foundation is to serve as an intermediary between potential donors and the hospital. In cooperation with the board of trustees of the medical center, the foundation's board attempts to distribute funds for needed equipment and services that will benefit the hospital and its ability to serve.
Besides memorial gifts, the foundation's two primary means of raising funds are its annual "Slice of Life." Benefit Auction & Golf Tournament in June and its "Caring Kind" campaign each December. The "Slice of Life" benefit is highlighted by the appearance of special guests from the areas of sports and entertainment. The "Caring Kind" is a year-end fund drive that normally focuses on a specific need of the medical center and assists many donors in offsetting potential taxes
Funding from the medical foundation has provided equipment for nearly every department of Goodland Regional Medical Center at one time or another, while additional funds have provided medical scholarships for both local high school graduates and hospital personnel.
Gifts to the medical foundation are tax-deductible due to its non-profit status. Contributions can be designated for a specific medical purpose by the donor and if non-designated will be used by the foundation board in the best medical interests of all residents. There are many ways of financially benefiting the foundation such as:
Appreciated marketable securities
Real Estate
Gifts of Grain
Gifts in Kind
Charitable Trusts
Bequests
Paid up Life Insurance
Wills
Other Estate Planning Options
